1. What is the Lufkin Community Food Drive?
The Community Food Drive was started in 1999, by the late Rev. Bettie Kennedy. Rev Kennedy enlisted numerous churches, businesses, and individuals to team together to provide Thanksgiving Food Baskets for families in need in East Texas. In 1999, approximately 50 families were fed. In 2023, we delivered to over 1,300 families. This year, our goal is to again reach 1,300 families.
HOW IT WORKS:
Using funds raised by the community, we provide a ham and approximately 20 food items to families in our area. Food boxes are prepared and delivered on the same day (Saturday, November 22nd) by between 350-450 volunteers.
FUNDRAISING:
Our fundraising goal for this year is $30,000. That is a traditionally large increase from year’s past. More families, higher food prices. We do buy directly from the Food Bank in Tyler to stretch the dollars.
2. How can I help?
Interested in helping out? Come help assemble and deliver!
Who: Anyone! Children/families are welcome!
When: Friday, November 21st at 5:00 PM at the Lufkin Parks and Recreation Center
- Setup. Box Assembly. Arrangement for the Food Drive, the Next Day.
Saturday, November 22nd at 8:30 a.m.
- Delivery, Assembly of Food Boxes.
- We’re typically finished by noon. Come for as long as you’re able.
Where: Lufkin Parks and Recreation Center, 516 Montrose St., Lufkin, Texas 75901
What: We’ll assemble 1,300 boxes then deliver. Family names and addresses, along with directions, are provided for those making deliveries.
3. How can I nominate a family to receive food?
Call 936-631-3176 or email bnowell@dpsol.com with: – Family name, Address (including detailed directions to the home), Home/cell phone number, Number of people living in the home, the Contact Person at the Home. We cannot guarantee a food box, but we will do our best to reach them on November 22nd.
